How to Choose a Hotel API Provider for Your Travel Business

A hotel API can help a travel agency or online travel platform offer accommodation through its own booking experience. The right provider depends on your customers, markets, commercial terms and the support you need after a reservation.

Start with your customers and markets

List the destinations, property types and booking patterns that matter to your business. An India-focused agency may need strong domestic coverage as well as inventory in the international destinations its customers visit most. Ask each provider how it serves those markets and whether your intended sales channels are permitted.

Hotel counts need context. One provider may count accommodation properties while another counts listings from multiple suppliers. The same hotel may appear more than once. Ask for a relevant sample or demonstration rather than comparing totals alone.

Understand the provider model

Bedbanks and wholesalers distribute accommodation through trade relationships. Global distribution systems may suit agencies with an existing GDS agreement. Some OTA partner APIs offer content, redirects or booking flows to eligible partners. Aggregators can combine suppliers, but some require your own supplier contracts and credentials.

For a documented SRDV workflow, review the SRDV Hotel API documentation.

Compare access and commercial terms

Ask who can apply, whether test access is available and what is required for live production. Public documentation does not automatically grant permission to sell inventory. A provider may require account approval, a commercial agreement, certification or additional checks.

Separate API development costs from provider fees, deposits, settlement arrangements and taxes. Check rate types, currencies, payment responsibilities and limits that apply to your account. Request current terms in writing; an advertised test environment does not establish that live bookings are free.

Check the full booking journey

Ask how the API handles hotel content, search, room details, rate rechecks and booking. Confirm supported status retrieval, cancellation and customer-service processes. Find out what happens when a price changes or a booking response is delayed. A successful payment is not, by itself, a confirmed reservation.

Review documentation quality, support contacts, testing scenarios and responsibility for ongoing updates. If you plan to use multiple suppliers, include hotel matching and operational reconciliation in the project scope.

Create a practical shortlist

Compare each provider against your important destinations, commercial requirements, technical capabilities and support needs. Discuss the shortlist with the people who will operate the booking platform and handle exceptions.
